representative. Historical records should instead be obtained from the Archives
Division of the Library of Virginia. Certain cities, like Norfolk, Newport News, Richmond, and Hampton do not have complete records archived at the State Health Department. Personal visits are also allowed. Birth records become open to the public after a hundred years.In case the records are not available at the State Health Department, they are most likely available at the Library of Virginia. Some records are available only in microfilm. The downside to getting records from the Library of Virginia is that the institution does not provide copies nor does it provide record searches. This means people have to do the research themselves. Marriage and divorce records are stored at the Office of Vital Records & Health Statistics. They are not available to the public until fifty years after the origination of the marriage or divorce record. Copies of these vital records are available for ten dollars each. Certain marriage records which originated before 1853 are only available at the courthouse of the county they originated. Marriage or divorce records that aren’t found at these places are most likely to be found in the Library of Virginia.
