Vermont Criminal Records: When Is Access Allowed?

The VCIC is the central repository of Vermont criminal records from all over the state. You can check on your own criminal history for whatever reason. But the VT State Government outlaws certain criminal record checks on other people.


Vermont criminal records dissemination is centralized at the Vermont Criminal Information Center. Launched as early as the summer of 1970, the VCIC serves as the repository for Vermont criminal records from various government departments and agencies.

VT Criminal Records - How to Access VCIC Records

1. Personal History Check
You can get a copy of your personal criminal information for any reason through two ways.

a. Get your records by personally appearing at the VCIC at 103 South Main St., Waterbury, VT between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Bring two IDs (at least one should be a federal- or state-issued photo ID that has not expired)
- Check valid ID combinations at the VCIC website (URL below).

b. Download and print the request form from the VCIC website.
- Fill in the form and have it notarized.
- Mail it to: VCIC, Criminal Records Section, 103 South Main St., Waterbury, VT 05671-2101.
- Enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope plus your money order or check (Payee: VCIC) to cover the $10 processing fee.
- Check all mail-in request requirements because incomplete requests will not be processed.

2. Authorized History Check for Other People
New state laws that became effective in the summer of 2006 qualify certain parties to request or receive personal criminal history background checks for people other than themselves.

Are you or your organization part of populations regarded as vulnerable in the State of Vermont? Then you may request a criminal history check to screen prospective employees.

This is not a compulsory employment procedure and an employer is not required to perform the check. After you offer a prospective employee or volunteer a conditional offer/status, you may get his/her permission to conduct the check.

Examples of qualified organizations, which are included in vulnerable populations, are groups that care/treatment, training/education to:
- Children
- Senior Citizens
- Disabled Persons

The VT government outlaws checking the Vermont criminal records of an individual who has not received a conditional offer. It is also illegal to conduct a criminal history check on an individual currently employed by the requesting body.
