The North Dakota criminal records that are most easily accessed through the ND state government and law enforcement agencies have to do with sex offenders and delinquents. ND is one of the states that have readily accessible photos of sex offenders, regardless of risk level. Even out of state offenders who work or study in ND are sometimes required to register.

North Dakota criminal records are devoted either to sex offenders or absconders. Two webpages maintained by the ND Attorney General's Office contain data on sex offenders, while a webpage in the state government website is for North Dakota criminal records on absconders.

Absconders are offenders that have been released back into society under probation or parole, but have failed to report to their probation or parole officers based on an agreed schedule. They are now therefore considered wanted offenders.

The ND Sex Offender website has pages upon pages of photographs of recently located sex offenders, including those who have been classified as delinquents. ND does not distinguish between offense levels and places everyone on the photo page, from low- to high-risk offenders.

A user-friendly search engine is also available where, unlike those from other states, all fields (first and last names, zip code, city, and county) need not be filled in to yield results. The search can also be narrowed down to exclude (or include) offenders who are currently incarcerated.

Maintained by the State Attorney General to comply with federal laws requiring registration, the database compiles registry data from police departments and sheriff's offices throughout ND.

Under certain instances, registrants from out of state are ordered to register their ND work or college/university addresses.

The state government maintains the database to protect its residents. However, if any individual resorts to harassment, vandalism, intimidation, etc. of registered offenders (or their families and employers) the ND government will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute the individual.

Although probation and parole violators found in the database are under the supervision of the ND Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the state government advises that the information found here not be regarded as a confirmed warrant or necessarily part of North Dakota criminal records.
