Nevada Criminal Records: Working Sans a Statewide Correctional Search

Nevada is one of the states that have no statewide search for Nevada criminal records available to the public as yet. But when you cannot access historical records in the state correctional system, you can use the state or federal judicial system. Or you can always pick up the phone and call the county court.

Nevada criminal records can be found mainly through the NCIS or the Nevada Criminal Information System. This online database stores information on current inmates and those who have carried out their sentences within the last year and a half. Nevada criminal records of a historical nature are not available through the NCIS.

Only 29 states in the United States have a statewide search of criminal records. Unfortunately, Nevada is not one of them.

So if you run into a third party vendor website that claims to provide a statewide search of criminal records in NE, it may just be an inmate search. This is the same exact service you can get from the NCIS website (www.doc.nv.gov/ncis) free of charge.

If the offender has been released, is on parole or probation, or is in the custody of a county jail and not the state prison, your search may turn up a “no record.”

NV Criminal Records - Using the Judicial System

When a state's Correctional Department can only help you with an inmate search, the alternative is doing research using the US Judicial System.

Criminal cases from across America are available online through the PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records) website at pacer.psc.uscourts.gov. The cost of viewing or downloading court records is $.08 per page with a total cost that will not exceed $2.40.

Another place to go online is the Federal Judiciary website at www.uscourts.gov/courtlinks. You can either perform a search of the court you want by zip code or you can click on the United States map on the lower half of the page.

The thing you will have to deal with when you research using federal court dockets is that inclusive dates may be limited. Identifying data may also be limited so you may not find all the information you want.

This can be especially tricky when the person you are searching for has a common name that may turn up several times so it can be hard to verify.

Sometimes, rather than spending time trying to track down what you need online, the best thing to do would be to pick up the phone, call the county court, and get help in finding the Nevada criminal records you need.
