Marriage
Certificate for Delaware State: Where to Get Them
A
marriage certificate for Delaware will be filed at either of two places.
Marriage certificates dated 1965 and onwards are filed at the Delaware Vital
Statistics Office, while those dated 1913-1964 may be found at the state's public
archives repository.
Marriage certificates in
Delaware may be accessed via the
Delaware Health and Social Services website. Marriage certificate
applications may be accessed through the website.
A marriage certificate is one
of the three main kinds of civil marriage records. The other two are the license
and the register. The certificate basically serves as physical proof that a
marriage ceremony did indeed take place.
The license, on the other hand,
is the document that allows a couple to marry; while the register is the record
the county clerk makes when the license is returned.
Multiple records are useful
since couples have been known to take out a license and not push through with
the ceremony.
The person or office that
presided over the ceremony and/or recorded it presents the certificate to the
couple. Unlike the marriage license, which looks like a legal document, the
certificate looks like what it is meant for: a keepsake for framing.
The kind of data on a marriage
certificate may vary, although the following will always be found: the names of
the couple, and when and where the marriage took place.
Marriage certificates may turn
out to be the most difficult to locate among public records since they are
typically intended for the couple to keep. During earlier times, officials did
not usually keep copies of them. However, some archives have been known to
include original certificates.
