computer on plain paper and bearing the words, “For Informational Purposes
Only.” This means that this copy cannot be used for legal purposes.
An informational copy does not bear the embossed seal and signature of the agent
who issued it. You may, however, request a photocopy of the original that shows
who the issuing agent is.
You can generally be eligible for an informational copy by simply applying and
paying the right fee, although some states may have stricter rules governing the
release of vital records.
Non-government databases also offer a similar service; but many of these will
merely provide online verification as an entry in a web page and charge you
something only when you want them to generate a document. However, these
databases will also inform you what the requirements are per state so you can
follow up on your search.
What Is a Certified Copy and Who Can Avail of It?
A certified copy is a computer print out of the marriage certificate on security
paper. It normally bears the signature and seal of the issuing office; but if it
does not and you need the information, you may have the state’s vital records
division certify it as true a photocopy of the original certificate.
Only eligible persons who apply and pay for this document may be furnished a
copy. If you are one of the persons on record or is a blood relation of any one
of them (e.g., child, parent, brother, sister, etc.) you may be eligible.
If you are or have been married to any of the persons on record, you may also be
eligible. Eligibility extends to a listed person’s lawyer, doctor, and any
person representing an eligible individual.
Of course, since any kind of copy of marriage certificate is a public document,
eligibility can also be obtained by court order.
