In 1988, Mariah Carey started out as a backup singer for Brenda K. Starr. At a party, Brenda gave a demo tape of Carey singing to Jerry Greenberg, head of WTG records. The demo tape somehow ended up in, Columbia Record’s president, Tommy Mottola’s hands and was awed by Carey’s singing voice. Mottola looked for Mariah Carey and let her sign a contract with Columbia Records. This is how the couple first met and this is where Mariah Carey started rising to fame.

Under Columbia Records, Carey started with her first album and every single was a chart topper. Her first album was a great hit.

Carey and Mottola were working together for years and she got most of her support from Mottola. What started out as a professional relationship turned into something deeper. On June 5, 1993, Mariah Carey, 23 and Tommy Mottola, 43, got married at the St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manhattan. This was one of the biggest weddings at that time with a lot of famous friends in attendance.

The marriage did not stop Carey or Mottola to produce more hits. Carey produced more albums and went on doing tours all over the United States. She released a third album Music Box that was again another success. Mariah Carey also had a Christmas album which contained classical Christmas songs. In 1995, she released again another album Daydream, which became another chart topper. With all her hit songs and growing popularity, Mariah held a world tour that included the countries of Japan, Germany, France, England and Netherlands.

But on May 30, 1997, just before the couple’s wedding anniversary, they announced their separation. There were rumors that Mariah Carey was unhappy with the marriage despite what she shows to the public. She felt like a prisoner and wanted to have her freedom.
