The Elizabeth Taylor and Conrad Hilton, Jr. Divorce
In February 1, 1951,
Elizabeth Taylor filed divorce from her husband Conrad Hilton, Jr.
citing Extreme Cruelty in the Los Angeles Superior Court divorce
records after reaching a settlement of $500,000. Today, Elizabeth
Taylor is still active in the movie industry and is set to film a
movie.
Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor was one of the most
popular leading actresses in the 1950s while Conrad Nicholson Hilton,
Jr. was the heir to the heir of the Hilton Hotels.
They exchanged their vows in Beverly Hills at The Church of Good
Shepherd on May 6, 1950. Liz was at the tender age of 18 years old
while Nicky was 26. This was the biggest wedding of that year.
On the way to the Church, a brigade of motorcycling police with blazing
sirens heralded the couple’s arrival to the church. The wedding
became part of the headline because of the couple’s status and
their friends were a lot of famous people in the guest list that
includes Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Roddy McDowall, Ginger Rogers, Joan
Bennet, Spencer Tracy, Mickey Rooney and many more. But it was not just
the couple and the guests that created the headlines. The wedding
dress, the cake and most especially the 4 karat diamond-platinum ring
worth $10,000 were also given very serious thoughts.
Even before the wedding, Liz Taylor and Nicky Hilton encountered
several problems. One of those problems was about religion. Nicky was a
devout Catholic while Liz was a Protestant. Liz was ready to be
converted to Catholicism but it was her father who did not approve of
it. But they soon reached an agreement that though the wedding may be a
Catholic ceremony for as long as Elizabeth would remain a Protestant.
There were also problems that arose even just within their 3 nights of
being married. Nick spent most of his times drinking alcoholic
beverages during the first three nights of their honeymoon. It started
with Nicky gambling and drinking heavily all night while they were on
the liner Queen Mary. Nicky was also known to have punched Liz heavily
on the stomach that knocked her on her knees and this moved on for the
next few months.
At last, after 9 months of marriage, Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor filed
for a divorce in the Los Angeles Superior Court. She and Conrad
Nicholson Hilton, Jr. at the time of divorce still did not have a baby.
