County Death Records In Massachusetts

County records for deaths that took place between the 1840s and 1910s may be accessed through the Massachusetts Archives. Earlier deaths are on record in the individual cities or towns where they occurred.

County death records in Massachusetts were founded as early as 1635, when vital data registration began being implemented in the state. Although it was not until 1841 that state registration started, Massachusetts began early enough that many genealogy researchers use state records as convenient alternatives, unlike their counterparts in other states.

Death records from 1911 up until today may be found at the State Health Department's Vital Statistics Office. You may get copies of county death records at the state level:

a) In person – visit 150 Mt. Vernon St., Dorchester

b) Via the Internet – visit this website

c) Via phone – call (617) 740-2606

d) Via fax – download order form and fax to 1-866-881-9699

e) Via the postal system - Vital Records and Statistics, 150 Mt. Vernon St., 1/F Dorchester, MA 02125-3105

For inquiries, call (617) 740-2600. Although marriage and birth records are restricted for subjects born out of wedlock, county death records in Massachusetts have no such limits.
