Speeding - Rushing Can be Dangerous! What is speeding? It is the crime of driving beyond the speed limit dictated by law on a specific road (or streatch of it). Speeding may not seem dangerous but it can nonetheless result in the serious loss of property and even life. The
next time you’re in a hurry to drive somewhere, think twice
before you start
speeding. First of all, you need to stay within the speed limit of the
road
where you are driving. If you get caught by the police, then you will
be issued
a ticket for speeding, which subjects you to a heavy fine. If you're a
perennial lawbreaker, you may
even be
asked to make an appearance in court and be sentenced to take driving
classes as
rehabilitation. Even if there seems to be no sign of a cop in the area,
you may
just be entering speed traps, which are usually located behind bridge
abutments
or in blind corners of the road. The
True Risks of Speeding
But
none of these risks can be compared to the possibility of a traffic
accident
that could endanger your life as well as the passengers of other
vehicles. It
is not surprising that it is more likely for anyone to experience a
road
accident than a plane crash. Furthermore,
getting only two speeding tickets could increase your insurance
premiums by as
much as fifty percent. It is not only riskier to be speeding, it also
becomes
more expensive for you to maintain a vehicle and more difficult to keep
a clean
driving record. When
assessing the fatalities that have occurred because of speeding, they
occur
because of a third factor which the driver possesses at the time. The
accident
may have transpired because the driver was fatigued or under the
influence of
alcohol. In some cases, bad weather and lighting conditions may also
have
contributed to the accident. In rarer cases animals may also have been
obstructing the roads while the driver was speeding. What’s
Being Done about Speeding?
As
law enforcers cannot be hiding in every corner day in and day out, it
has
become
more efficient and cost-effective to place speeding cameras in prime
locations.
These cameras will take a photograph of the speeding vehicle, noting
the time
and date of occurrence. Since the plate number of the vehicle will be
recorded,
the owner will be apprehended at a later date. Although these cameras
have done
little to decrease the overall number of traffic accidents, they have
certainly
helped in the enforcement of the speed limit. However,
studies have shown that simply enforcing a speed limit has not been
enough of a
deterrent in causing traffic accidents. What is required is the proper
education of drivers of the consequences of their actions. All it takes
is some
discipline on the road to decrease the number of traffic accidents and
make
driving safer for everyone. === |
