Serial Killers - An Unquenching Desire for Death

Serial killers are those who commit murder by the numbers regardless of whether they commit the crimes in fast succession or after a 'pause'. Serial killings are often characterized by a 'trademark' or 'signature' left by the murderer.

Serial killers have been immortalized in pop culture through films, television and books, but few of us really know much about them except of what we hear in the news. By definition, serial killers are those who kill people in three or more events. There is often a period that will lapse between one killing sets off another. This period could be a few days or weeks, but could also take as long as several years before the serial killer will strike again. There is also a distinct characteristic that will tie all these murders together whether a similarity in the location where they are done or the appearance or qualities of the victims that the serial killer chooses.

Serial Killers and their Personality Profiles

The profile of most serial killers is that they are often psychopaths. On the surface, they may wear a mask of normality and sanity and in some cases, may often be quite charming. Underneath this veneer is the psychosis, which drives them to kill their victims. In most cases, although this is not always present, there may also be a sexual element involved in the killings.

Most serial killers may have experienced some form of abuse as children, whether physical, sexual or psychological. This abuse is often manifested in the killings that he performs later in his life. They also have very rich fantasy lives, often involving murder early on in their adolescence. It may take some time for them to turn these fantasies into reality but they are often a response to the humiliation the serial killer has experienced before.

Psychologists have also discovered that there may be some characteristics that manifest themselves in the childhood of people who eventually become serial killers. For instance, the would-be serial killer may have many instances of fire starting. This may be because of a need to gain attention or to simply cause destruction. Another sign that is seen in childhood is bed wetting even at an abnormally older child's age. They may also show excessive cruelty to animals, which may be common in children to show off to their friends but in serial killers, this is often done alone for personal enjoyment. They may also experiment on larger animals like cats and dogs instead of the normal insects that children play with.

The Two Types of Serial Killers

Serial killers are actually grouped into two main types. First are the organized ones. These people are highly intelligent human beings who go to great lengths to plan out their crimes, to divert attention and suspicion on someone else and ensure their success each time. The second type of serial killers are disorganized ones. The organized ones may eventually evolve into disorganized types as they find themselves in a killing rampage.

There are many motivations for serial killers but most of them are often compelled by the hallucinations they have in their head for murder. Some believe that they are doing society a favor by expunging a certain type of individual. Others perform their murders for the sheer enjoyment that they derive from it.
