Gang Rape - Rape by More than One

What is gang rape? Gang rape is identified as the sexual assault on a single person by two or more offenders. Gang rape is also referred to as group rape or pack rape. In many jurisdictions, gang rape is more severely punished than rape committed by one person.

The psychology behind gang rape often dwells on pack mentality where an individual becomes capable of doing something he normally cannot and will not do on his own. Another reason that enables a person to participate in gang rape could be the distribution of liability and responsibility for the crime. Due to this, gang rape is highly prevalent during wars when pack mentality is most high.

In a gang rape scenario, you often have a leader who is dominant and a reluctant participant. As the group gets into pack mentality, the members of the group often find themselves performing for each other’s approval and even competing with each other making gang rape even more horrendous and damaging for the victim.

There are certain suggestions as to why gang rapes occur:

  • As a form of punishment by the friends of the boyfriend to a girlfriend suspected of unfaithfulness
  • To put unattainable women in their place
  • As part of a man’s initiation to a group or gang
  • As part of a woman’s admission or initiation to a gang-controlled prostitution group

Statistics. About 10% to 20% of sexual assaults reported in the US are gang rapes. Many researchers however, deem the figure to be higher, particularly in South African countries, as many gang rape cases go unreported.

Gang Rape - Raising the Race Issue

Particularly in Western countries like France and Australia, the issue of racial gang rape is beginning to cause quite a stir due to several reports where Caucasian teenage girls have been allegedly gang raped by black or colored males. Some groups, especially in Paris, also use gang rape as a form of initiation to the group.

Among the most controversial cases are the series of Sydney gang rape cases where Australian women, mostly teenagers, were raped by a group of 14 Muslim Lebanese Australian men led by their leader Bilal Skaf. Only 9 out of the 14 in the group, including their leader, were convicted to prison for the rape cases. Many regard Sydney gang rape as a hate crime.

The stories for many racial gang rape cases are similar. A black male chooses and approaches a teenage white female. When they become friendly or intimate, he then takes her to a place where the gang is waiting and lets his buddies assault her.

These occurrences are generally racially-motivated with some of the victims being questioned about their heritage during the assault and with many of the offenders coming from Middle Eastern origin.

Racial gang rape is now viewed by some as one of the major negative consequences of racial diversity that’s being highly encouraged and promoted in the Western world.
