What are Date Rape Drugs?

Date rape is one of the hardest crimes to approve because the victim and the offender know each other. To help prevent this crime, educate yourself by finding out what offenders use to incapacitate their victims so you can stay clear of them.

Date rape drugs pertain to any drug or substance that can and is used to commit sexual assault on another person. Date rape drugs are usually added to food and/or drink and normally have sedative, amnesiac, dissociative, and/or hypnotic effects on a person.

Many date rape drugs have no color, smell, or taste, and may even be difficult to detect in the body system after it’s been administered and the effects had worn off.

Date rape drugs have become a powerful weapon for committing sex crimes. The haze of oblivion that often comes with its use can let many offenders get away with their crimes without the victims even knowing that they have been assaulted.

Victims of date rape drugs are normally rendered helpless to say no to the sexual act thereby turning it to a sexual assault.

Types of Date Rape Drugs

Among the many date rape drugs, alcohol remains to be the most commonly used particularly since victims partake of it willingly. In lower doses, alcohol can simply lower a person’s inhibition. In greater doses, alcohol can sedate and even render a victim unconscious. It can also lead to partial or complete amnesia regarding the events that took place during the period of intoxication.

Nevertheless, there are three major date rape drugs that have been identified:

  1. Benzodiazepines – a sedative and/or hypnotic drug that causes amnesia by varying degrees. This includes flunitrazepam or Rohypnol a.k.a. “roofies”. Benzodiazepines usually results in anterograde amnesia where the victim will not remember what happened while under the influence of the drug.

Roofies often come in the form of a pill and easily dissolves in liquids. Olds pills have no color making it more difficult to detect although newer Rohypnol pills turn blue when added to liquid.

The sedative effects of Benzodiazepines appear around 15-20 minutes after ingestion and the effects last from 4 to 6 hours. There are reported instances though when its effects can last up to 12 hours or more after ingestion.

It’s been discovered that scientist can detect traces of the drug in a person’s urine 5 days after ingestion and in a person’s hair one month after taking in a single dose of the drug.

  1. Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) – a drug with effects similar to alcohol. GHB is an invisible drug that easily dissolves in water, odorless, and when mixed with beverages even appear tasteless (though many say the drug can make the drink a tad salty).

GHB is well known as the club and party drug. Unlike other date rape drugs however, GHB needs to be taken in larger doses (about 1 to 3 grams) for it to be effective. This makes GHB easier to be detected than other drugs.

  1. Ketamine – a legal drug used as veterinary sedative or anesthesia. The effects of ketamine include delirium, hallucinations, cardiac excitement, confusion, euphoria, mild respiratory depression, amnesia, and coma among others.

Ketamine can be taken orally or nasally and takes 10 to 20 minutes before the effects set in. It can also be taken intravenously to have more instantaneous effect. The effect of the drug lasts for about 3 hours but can be detected in the body system for up to 48 hours depending on how it was ingested.

Ketamine is in white powder form when undiluted and turn water a little cloudy when dissolved in it.

One of the more sensational date rape drugs is Progesterex. Progesterex is a small sterilization pill used by veterinarians to sterilize large animals. The drug, however, is now widely used not just to rape victims but to sterilize them as well. Many rapists use Progesterex with Rohypnol. Rohypnol is used to sedate the victims while Progesterex makes sure that the victim doesn’t conceive from the crime so the perpetrator wouldn’t have to worry about paternity tests later on.
