Crime and Forensics - Using the Latter to Solve the Former

Crimes occur everday and it is a gargantuan task to solve all of them. However, thanks to advancements in forensic technology, we move one step closer to really serve justice for all.

Crime and forensics have received a resurgence of interest after being featured on numerous top-rating television shows. The crime scene investigators on television may have it easy but forensics is a precise science that assists in solving these mysteries and crimes. Crime and forensics takes into account the legal process and requires that criminologists or forensics experts take the helm.

With the union of crime and forensics, it has become easier to catch a culprit even though evidence may not be immediately seen by the naked eye. The reality is that a part of a perpetrator's physical presence is always left behind at the scene of the crime whether it is a stray hair, a footprint or even mud from your shoe. The DNA of a person has also been used in vast and unlimited ways in crime and forensics investigations.

Crime and Forensics - Arriving on the Scene

Once  criminologists get to the scene of the crime, the place has to be strictly contained. Adhering to procedure is essential so as not to lose important evidence in the crime scene. The area has to be cordoned off so that entry and exit is restricted to people whose business is official and essential for crime and forensics. A record has to be kept of everyone who arrives and leaves the crime scene so that relevant clues are not lost. It is also determined whether this is a primary or a secondary site with a primary site being the place where the crime happened and a secondary site one which served a pit stop before the actual crime scene.

All records that can be kept of the crime scene are collected, including documents with detailed descriptions, photographs, videos and sketches. The area is scoured repeatedly following different patterns to ensure that even the smallest details are recorded. A circular round of the crime scene may be followed by a linear one and then a crisscross pattern across the area.

Once the evidence has been located, it is now time to collate and collect everything for assessment and analysis. During the analysis of the evidence, there can be fingerprinting done to determine who the culprit is. The practice of fingerprinting in crime and forensics has been around since the late 1800s but is still being used today. Everyone's unique fingerprint is stored in a database and any prints found on the crime scene are matched with this.

DNA Analysis only broke onto the scene of crime and forensics in 1986 but since that momentous time, it has become widely practiced in investigations. Due to much advancement in this arena of crime and forensics, it has now become possible to determine a perpatrator's skin color, ethnicity, facial features, and ulitmtaelt, his/her identity through the DNA found at the crime scene. Even cases dating back to the 1950s have now been reopened because of the possibilities that DNA Analysis has brought. Today, unsolved cases are given a second chance at resolution thanks to the power of DNA analysis in identifying the perpetrator of the crime.
