What are Civil Judgements?

Civil judgments are simply the decisions of courts, which dispose controversies involving a person’s relationship, duty, or obligation towards his family and neighbors. The award or decree usually just calls for the payment of damages, and rarely calls for the imprisonment of the losing party.

Civil judgments are the pronouncements of the court in a proceeding that does not involve the violation of criminal statutes. The judgment does not only refer to the concluding portion of the magistrate’s resolution which outlines the result of the controversy, as the term is applicable to the whole document or instrument containing the opinion of the court.

Civil judgments dispose disputes involving human, family, and contractual relations. The subject matter of civil judgments can range from marital disputes, to the settlement of the estate of a deceased person. This branch of law (civil), as compared to criminal and corporate law, is virtually all encompassing. It covers almost any human act or relationship.

Civil judgments in marital disputes usually involve the termination of the union. The court may rule that a supervening event or an act that has transpired subsequent to the marriage may cause the dissolution of the marriage, and issue a decree of divorce. If the deed or cause happened or existed before the marriage, then the judgment would be one for annulment.

A court’s ruling on an annulment or divorce suit will not only involve or affect the spouses. The decision may also state as to which parent will have the custody of the children. The division of the conjugal properties will also be included in the ruling.

Tort cases are among the most commonly filed suits in court. The complainant usually asks for a certain amount of money to compensate any injury that he may have suffered from the defendant. The injury is not only limited to those which have been inflicted physically, as mental and emotional sufferings can also be the subject of a civil judgment.
