Family Court Cases Involving Children

Family court cases revolve around problems involving children and families. The main goals of the Family Court are to protect, to assist and whenever possible, to restore families whose security and welfare have been threatened.

Family court cases are handled by a special court called the Family Court. These courts aim to work to uphold the security and welfare of families. They also make sure kids within their jurisdiction receive ample guidance, control and care that are beneficial to their well-being and conducive to the state's best interests.

Petitions for divorce and any motions related to divorce proceedings like alimony, child custody, property distribution and support are all heard in Family Court. The Family Court also hears parental and child support complaints. It has jurisdiction over issues relating to wayward, abused, delinquent, neglected, dependent and mentally deficient youth. A Family Court likewise has jurisdiction over child marriages, paternity proceedings, adoptions and other matters that involve juveniles and domestic relations.

1. Adjudicatory or fact-finding hearings.
2. Hearings regarding parental rights terminations.
3. Permanent guardianship or adoption finalization hearings – these complete the process of establishing new, permanent and legal homes for children.
4. Detention hearings – these come soon after children are removed from their homes.
5. Permanency hearings – these are held every six months till children are placed in permanent homes and the cases are closed.
