Hot Tips For Accessing Public Records In Maine Online
Still confused with public records searching via the Internet? Follow these
online searching tips and you'll find public records in Maine online in no time.
Public birth records in Maine
are conveniently accessed through the
Ancestry.com website. The site is especially useful if you do not have
enough data to request a specific birth record from the Vital Records Office at
the Human Services Department in Augusta.
Furthermore, the site helps
with the unwieldy task of searching through the birth records of a nation that
registers 1 birth every 7 seconds!
Online Access To Public Birth
Records In Maine
To save time and maximize your
search, do the following:
1. Type in as
much data as possible.
The Ancestry.com
search engine will AUTOMATICALLY return as many variations on a name as
possible, even turning up nickname alternatives for proper names (e.g., Jack for
John, Bill for William, etc.). However, you will still have to input as much
criteria as you are able for the site to pull a result you can find useful.
2. Do use the
wildcard.
To get the
search engine to do even more for you in terms of turning up name variations,
use wildcard symbols, such as asterisks and questions marks. Wildcards stand for
an unknown number or letter (e.g., 196* to turn up a decade's worth of results;
Chris* to turn up Christina, Christie, Christi, Chrissie; J?n is equivalent to
both Jon and Jan, etc.)
3. Estimate and
guess rather than leaving a blank field.
Always estimate
dates, staying within around two to four years. This will ensure a manageable
return as compared to not putting down any date. Guessing a birth location also
goes a long way.
4. Put in a
middle name.
This will narrow
the results considerably.
5. Choose a
single category.
Do explore the
category left of your result. This will turn up a new page with results that can
help you narrow down your search, page by page, to a specific database.
6. Match only
broad categories.
Do use the
“Exact Matches” box. However, it is a good idea to use it only for broad
categories such as location and last name.
7. Add or drop
criteria to refine your search.
At times, it
is best to do without SOME estimates or guesses if results are too few, or add
data little by little until you get a reasonable results volume.
