Why Would One Want to Carry Out a Birth Parent Search?
Some people believe that a birth parent search is a right that every adoptee
should have. In contrast to modern times, little attention has been paid to the

defines as “a term for an individual’s comprehension of him or herself as a
discrete, separate entity”) if details about his past or origin are withheld
from him. According to a study on adopted people, unanswered questions involving
this matter may bring about confusion and misunderstanding among the members of
the adopted person’s new family. Allowing adopted people to search for their
birth parent(s) preserves and unifies their present families.
Birth Parent Search Requests
Upon reaching the age of majority, an adopted person may already request for a
birth parent search to determine his biological parents’ identities and retrieve
a copy of his original birth certificate. There are documents that have to be
verified and considered first before granting the request.
A birth parent search can be expedited if an affidavit of consent exists. This
instrument is signed and executed by the adopted person’s parents, serving as a
written permission for their child to be granted access to his adoption records.
If this document is not on file, the adopted person’s real parents will then be
asked if they would permit the disclosure of their identities and other personal
information to their son or daughter.
