The main purpose of birth notices is to announce the birth of a child to the public. Birth notices can also be associated with vital birth records where every birth is recorded and registered, regardless whether the child lives or not.

A birth notice usually contains all relevant information for the baby – name, sex, date and place of birth, hospital and attending doctor, weight and length of the baby, father’s name and mother’s maiden name, as well as the names of grandparents from both sides. A baby shower is probably the most extravagant and most expensive form of birth announcement. A baby shower is usually held four to six weeks before or after the baby’s birth.

While baby showers are traditionally held prior to childbirth, many find it more practical and convenient to celebrate it a month or two after the child is born. Waiting until the baby is a few weeks old before holding a shower party can have several advantages.

· The mother is more relaxed after childbirth and will be able to enjoy and even participate in the party games and activities.

Many, today, however, also hold baby showers or baby sprinkles for their subsequent children, believing that every child should be welcomed accordingly. Gifts for subsequent baby showers may already include common household and everyday items.
